Learning Opportunity: Activating, Creating, and Establishing College Credit in SC for Prior Military Learning

SFL TAPThe South Carolina Commission on Higher Education is collaborating with American Council on Education (ACE) Learning Evaluations (LE) to develop and deliver an innovative virtual and in-person learning experience to educate administrators, faculty, staff and veteran's student support services personnel on the importance of credit for prior learning (CPL) to assist the higher education community in the process of awarding credit for prior learning (CPL) to military connected students based on their military service.

This FREE, comprehensive training program was designed to highlight CPL's significance as an economic imperative, particularly for independent learners, with a special focus on its relevance to military-connected students. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of training.

The program's objectives are multi-faceted, aiming to foster measurable engagement among institutional stakeholders such as faculty, administrators, and leadership to bolster CPL foundations statewide. Additionally, it seeks to generate tailored resources based on industry frameworks, specifically addressing the interpretation and application of CPL credit for military-connected students. Finally, the training program aims to establish a replicable and scalable learning model that can be applied to other CPL areas of focus within the system.

Program Structure

The learning schedule is structured into four parts to optimize participant engagement and comprehension. It kicked off with a virtual synchronous "Orientation 2.0" on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. ET, providing a 45-minute orientation to the ACE Engage platform and the micro-courses.

Participants then engaged in asynchronous virtual learning from Nov. 19 - Jan. 20, completing three micro-courses:

- The ACE Review Process Onboarding

- Onboarding with the Military Guide

- Maximizing Military Learner Success

Participants were required to submit their final questions for each micro-course by Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. ET, laying the groundwork for the subsequent workshop.

The culminating event was an in-person training on Jan. 27 at the R2i2 Conference Center, 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia, SC 29223. This in-person training workshop was specifically designed to address the questions submitted by participants and reinforce key learning outcomes. ACE faculty evaluators engaged in the workshop, enriching the learning experience with their expertise and insights. Through this structured approach, participants will be equipped to understand the foundational concepts of CPL and also apply them effectively at their institutions.
