2022 Statistical Abstract provides detailed look at Higher Education trends and data in South Carolina

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education's 2022 Statistical Abstract is now available, providing a comprehensive source for the most recent data on South Carolina’s system of postsecondary education.

The abstract includes data through the end of the 2021-2022 academic year and includes a range of subjects, from enrollment and degrees awarded to state-funded sources of financial aid and beyond. This is the 44th year of the abstract, which is intended to help support understanding of postsecondary trends in South Carolina.

The 2022 Statistical Abstract’s data shows the following trends:

• Total headcount enrollment increased .3 percent (229,781 in 2020 to 230,566 in 2021).

• 55,548 total degrees were awarded during the 2020-21 fiscal year (up from 53,143 in 2020). 29,630 of these were bachelor’s degrees, 18,757 were other undergraduate level degrees, and 9,741 were graduate level degrees.

• Business, management, marketing and related support services remained the most popular academic discipline, followed by health professions and related programs.

The state also increased scholarship funding from $399,783,775 in the 2020-2021 academic year, to a total of $414,670,136 during the 2021-22 academic year, which was disbursed through five main scholarships:

• $210,891,388 awarded through LIFE Scholarships

• $74,688,478 through Palmetto Fellows scholarships

• $49,486,343 through Lottery Tuition Assistance

• $68,197,853 through Need-based Grants

• $11,406,073 through HOPE scholarships.

The CHE’s Statistical Abstract is published annually and is the result of collaboration with institutions’ data representatives and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
