More than 2,000 seniors from 40 high schools across South Carolina gathered at the State House today for the fifth annual College and Career Decision Day, a statewide celebration recognizing students who have committed to building their futures through college, careers or the military as the next step after graduation.

CCDD is modeled after the tradition of athletic signing days, where student-athletes formally announce their college commitments. The statewide rally brings that same level of recognition and excitement to all students, celebrating academic achievement and post-graduation plans regardless of the path chosen.

South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver offered words of encouragement to the graduating seniors during her address.

“Some of you are going to go to college, some of you are going straight into the workforce, and some of you are going to serve in uniform. And every single path has our deepest respect. Every path has dignity and purpose, and every path that you all choose today is strengthening South Carolina and our nation,” Weaver said. “A great education is the front door of the American dream, and today you are stepping through that door.”

South Carolina Commission on Higher Education President and Executive Director L. Jeffrey Perez, Ph.D., shared a proclamation from Gov. Henry D. McMaster with the crowd that designated May as South Carolina College and Career Decision Month.

South Carolina Rep. Jermaine Johnson, D.B.A., also took time to offer words of encouragement to the seniors. He recounted his own journey to overcome childhood challenges, successfully earn a doctorate degree, become a professional basketball player and ultimately get elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives.

CCDD has grown significantly since its inception, now averaging more than 2,000 students annually and reinforcing a statewide culture that values both college-going and career readiness. The celebration is also intended to serve as a visible reminder to younger students of the opportunities available after high school, helping to build momentum for continued education and workforce participation.

South Carolina graduates more than 50,000 high school seniors each year.
